Twerps - “Work It Out”

Right when I got back to College Park for school, I posted the first song from the Twerps’ upcoming 7”, “He’s In Stock.” Marty, Jules, Rick and Pat are some of my favorite people in the world, and “He’s In Stock” showed exactly why I love them. While having a sort of understated nature to his vocals, Marty just carries so much ….swag. That’s really the only way to describe it.

Now, on “Work It Out,” the Twerps pull it back a little bit in a song that’s perfect for when the leaves on the trees start to change color. The swagger from “He’s In Stock” is replaced with a quiet confidence from Marty as he sings, “We’re through, yeah, me and you. Done, done we’re done.” It’s clear it’s a decision that needs to be made and he knows he’s making the right choice, but there’s just the tiniest twinge of regret in his voice. It’s pretty relatable, right y’all?

There’s no shredding riff in “Work It Out” like there is in “He’s In Stock,” but in the last minute or so, the light tones of Jules’ guitar combine to create a dreamy, almost retrospective soundscape underneath the words “Work it out / Do it now / You get back as much as you put in.” It’s a contemplative track…and I love it. Also, Rick’s bass riff under the end of the song reminds me so much of Alex Bleeker’s work in Real Estate, and some of the tiny details in the drums are great.

“Work It Out” is due out digitally Sept. 18 and on vinyl Oct. 23 via Underwater Peoples and Chapter Music. They play Black Cat with the aforementioned Alex Bleeker on Oct. 17.

you say things that no one needs to know
you act out at everyone you don’t know
you waste time in pretending you’re there
i can tell by the look in your eye

we’re through
yeah, me and you
done, done, we’re through
that’s me and you

work it out
do it now
you get back
what you put in
work it out
do it now
you get back
as much as you put in

you can’t get anymore from this
i put too much time into you
you just wait, you wait and see
i’m gonna be the one standing over you

we’re through
yeah, me and you
done, done, we’re done
we’re through

work it out
do it now
you get back
what you put it in
work it out
do it now
you get back
what you put in

work it out
do it now
you get back
what you put in
